I saw a possum get run over on my walk.
I was shocked and sad to see it, wondering why I did. I saw the poor thing lay down in the middle of the street when the headlights flashed at him. He didn’t know what to do and went with his first instinct, leading to his end. The flight, fight or freeze reaction we have can be detrimental to our Prana, our life force. We are capable of making rational decisions; Being mindful while keeping true to ourselves.
Calming the nervous system is essential in keeping your reflexes in check, constantly being in flight or flight mode dissemblances the body, leading to not reacting at all or reacting too quickly. Not giving yourself space to make decisions leads to impulse or sometimes even laying down in the middle of the road.
Think of it like driving a car, you have to react quickly to the drivers around you, the roads you have to take and the unexpected detours. making sure to keep yourself and those around you safe, so everyone can arrive to their destination.
Staying where you are is never the answer because life is always moving just like a highway. Opportunities or warnings jump out at us that we hesitate to listen to and we have to find a way back to our destination, taking us longer than expected or through a unknown road.
Now this isn’t to say that the journey isn’t the destination, it is. But our discernment has to be used at all time, we have to be aware, mindful of our actions.
The decisions we make also affect our moods. Knowing you’ve made a choice that maybe hurt someone else or yourself, can effect our thoughts and future actions, maybe weighing on our shoulders.
movement is necessary to avoid functional freeze. Movement of the body settles the mind.
This is why yogic practices like Pranayamas, Asanas and the social ethics of theYamas can be applied to our lives daily.
The fourth Yama, Brahmacharya, or celibacy/moderation isn’t just sexual abstinence, it’s making choices that connect us to the divine. Conscious choices we make for ourselves.
Energy is sacred and our conservation and redirection of it helps to raise our Prana, helping us on the journey of consciousness, leading us to alignment. Better opportunities, wish fulfillment and balance.
_____
all of this to say, mindfulness is the name of the game.
